Why we feel sad about Michael Jackson’s death.

He was a man of immense musical talent. The consummate performer both as a child and adult. A true icon in the music world.

Living comparisons to his level of talent are few. Madonna and Mick Jagger come to mind for me. Suggestions are welcome.

The world accepted and embraced him.

But he never, in my opinion, accepted himself.

Hence the spectacle we’ve witnessed during the past 20 years as the young man of “The Jackson Five,” “Thriller,” “Billie Jean” (my favorite MJ song), and countless other hits transformed into a cyborg-like suspected child molester.

We don’t know yet why Michael Jackson died so suddenly but one thing seems certain: he was never happy being Michael Jackson.

And that fact makes most folks intuitively sad as we watch or listen to his music.

For all his talents, wealth, and fame, he could not translate the joy his music created in the hearts of so many around the world to his own life.

What a tragedy.

Rest in peace MJ.
