The 3 Pillars of Modern Civilization

I live in New Orleans and having witnessed Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, I was struck by how quickly modern civilization can come to a screeching halt.

Take away the following three pillars and a modern city will be brought to its knees within days: running water, electricity, and gasoline.

It’s pretty amazing when you think about it but its true: without 1 of the 3 you can manage; without 2 of the 3 you can survive without too much heartburn; take away all 3 and we are right back to the Stone Ages.

So whenever you have some extra time on your hands call up your local water, power, and oil company and thank ‘em.

And if anyone thinks of other “pillars” please put them in the comments below.
