In his June 1, 2009 speech regarding GM’s re-structuring President Obama spoke directly to auto workers:
But I want you to know that what you’re doing is making a sacrifice for the next generation — a sacrifice you may not have chose to make, but a sacrifice you were nevertheless called to make so that your children and all of our children can grow up in an America that still makes things; that still builds cars; that still strives for a better future.[1]
Since when did the President of the United States, or any government official, earn the right to decide who sacrifices what when?
We operate in a market economy governed by the rule of law: individuals have inalienable rights, free choice, and decide for themselves what they wish to sacrifice and when they wish to sacrifice it.
That’s the America veterans of all American wars have fought for, not one where the President becomes the Sacrificer in Chief.
Note to President Obama: you were hired to do the people’s will, not substitute your own for it.
